We all know how expensive a vet is and i am now going to enlighten you on how to save alot of money with your animal.
Firstly i am going to teach you something to encourage you to keep reading.
Have you ever found a baby animal that does not have a parent and you need to nurse it to health and raise it possibly. What do you do,, what do you feed it. This is the triick for all mammals that cant eat yet, Baby formula. All you need to do is go buy a serving of baby formula. It is only about $5 for a single serving, Prepare it as per the instructions. make sure it is warm but never too hot. Depending on the size of the animal, use a syringe or a bottle to feed it. When it is stronger or old enough you can start with its regular diet of mashed whatever but formula will save it.
Now do you have a cat that keeps biting its fur out? It has no fleas and you dont know why? Its depression most likely of there are no fleas. 1 week of anti depressants will do the trick.
If you have a pet and it is a mammal like yourself, most meds that you take for your well being will work for your animal so if you dont want ot pay a vet a fortune, treat the animal as you would your son or daughter. Always remember to make the dose right depending on its weight. For example if a grown adult is to take 1 pill that is 500mg in weight and your dog in this example is 20kg you need to divide the human dose by 5 so you would give a dog 100mg or 1/5 of the pill.
Another example would be an allergy, if your animal suddenly has an allergic reaction you can give an over the counter anti-histamine. Put it in some food as crushed powder and mix it around. If the animals mouth nad face is swelling, go to the vet as it may not get it down and the allergic reaction will require a needle. A pill may take too long. So if its very bad or its face is swelling fast dont risk its life to save a few dollars, go to the vet but this is very rare but i must make sure you know.
Most human treatments will work on our fury friends but never forget to adjust the dose for its weight and only for mammals. Do not treat birds as you would mammals. A bird is unfortunately best put down if suffering too much as a vet visit is usually more expensive than most birds. That is my opinion but maybe you love your budgie so much and would like to do everything you can to save it. I wouldnt do that, it may just drop dead from a fright the week later but thats up to you.
Some decent vets will give advice to you if you ask hard and tell them that you are not about to bring in a $20 bird to a $100 an hour vet consultation. Thats why we are the humans that have brains
Same goes with a mouse, rat and things like that. There life spans are not too long under the best of circumstances so please dont let them suffer. I know it can be a hard thing to do but putting these small animals out of there pain is the humane thing to do. I wont tell you how but you can easily google the best ways, depending on the animal. A dog or a cat should be taken to the vet though to be put down if needed because unless you really know what you are doing you will cause your friend unnecessary pain.
I am sorry if you dont like what you are reading but death always goes with pet ownership as pets life spans are but a fraction of our own, especially small animals. Please make sure you do it quickly though so they dont suffer. For small animals i think the best way is to chop off the head. If it were me, i would prefer to go like that to be put out of my misery. For example if your cat catches a bird and punctures its lung, there is nothing else that can be done so please put your hand down the front of your pants to see where your balls are and then do the right thing if your cat does something like that and you have a dying bird in pain on your doorstep.
Another thing is anti-biotics, as above adjust the does and anything you would take them for, you can give to your animal, such as for infections to wounds etc
I while back i had a bird which flew to my fish tank, the lid closed on its foot, 2 of its toes were hanging by a thread. It was a cockateil which are not too big. I rang the vet and found a good one who advised me what to do. I removed the 2 toes that were almost gone with some secateurs one was attached better than the other, but its not like i could of plastered a small birds toe. Anyway it bled alot but i had a soldering iron ready and hot. I used the soldering iron to caurterize the toes after a few touches and a big chirp from the bird, the bleeding stopped. Birds can die from fright so always cover there heads for anything you need to do, unless its very tame.Even when clipping its wings. If you dont know how, just google it, but its just a matter of cutting the 2 primary flight feathers from even just one wing will do the trick, It depends how much you dont want it ti fly around. Anyway my cockateil lived for another 10 years or so before i gave him to my Aunty and he ended up getting out and flying away. I did get him a girlfriend and he could not make any babies anymore because he could not grab onto her back with one foot. He still had 2 normal toes and 2 half toes but had no claws which made it hard.
Now about cats. In Australia this practice is illegal but i hear in america you guys amputate the claws from cats. What a horrible thing to do! Please dont declaw your cat. apparently it makes them bite more as they dont have anything to use for defense. When you declaw a cat, you are not taking just its claw but its entire top knuckle. If you dont want scratch marks on your furniture, get a dog and dont do this to your cat.
Now if you dont like what i have written here to help those who cant afford the vet or dont want to be ripped off. Before you say something have a think about the intelligent animal that you ate for dinner last night. Why shouldn't we treat our animals as we do our own children. Who is to say this is unethical? the vet who is losing money from you not needing them?Love your animal and always do the right thing with them. Also never hit them, there are plenty of ways to teach an animal without hitting. Usually a stern deep voice is good enough if you are a man.
Lately watch large dogs with young children. Unfortunately this needs to be said. I actually know a guy who's rottweiler killed his young daughter. The dogs dont understand that babies are actually small humans and can get jealous.
