I find the way that we farm animals for meat is not a nice practice, It is very similar to the way we farm vegetables yet animals are a conscious entity, There is a difference between hunting an animal who has had a normal life until the money it is predated to raising animals in order to harvest their flesh.
I have had these thought of not wanting to eat meat when i raised some chickens. I enjoyed and had no problem with eating their eggs while feeding them. I thought it was a fair exchange but even though these chickens were assholes and pecked anyone who would come near them, I still could not bring myself to slaughter and eat them.
I do not know how someone can raise any animal from a baby only to kill and eat them later on. I cant. I ended up giving the chickens away to someone who did not raise them and even though i dont know for sure, I do believe they were killed and eaten.
Substituting meat in your diet for another product is very expensive and excluding these nutrients from your diet is very unhealthy. When i have refrained from eating meat i have had to drink at least 5 servings of protein shake just to keep from losing weight. This is a very hard think to do especially for a man that works hard physically every day.
Anyway i now eat meat but not as much as before because my body feels that it needs the nutrients and like i said above, it is too expensive to substitute the nutrients with something else that i get from eating a bit of meat. As far as kids go, I dont think it is wise to give a child a conscious about the animals they eat. Let them decide when they are grown and until then feed them what they need in order to grow.
Id love to here others experiences with vegetarianism. Unfortunately now when i do eat meat i dont feel right about it. Most people dont have this problem due to how we distance the consumer from the abattoir. I wish you all the best with your diet and hopefully one day we as humans can find another way to obtain our met without being so cruel to animals. At least us western countries treat animals alot more humanely than soem other countries.
